In March 2013, as Kris’ daughter, Melissa, was about to return to Minnesota from a spring break visit home, Kris mentioned that she would like to get healthy and would like to get into shape. She asked Melissa to watch her do a squat. Horrified by what she saw, Melissa said, “I know a guy!” She told her Mom to call CrossFit DownRiver in the morning, which she did, and went to see Kirk for her first workout. After having the common first day reaction of crying, and asking “what the hell am I doing here,” Kris returned the next day. She promised herself and Melissa she would stick it out at least until Melissa returned home for the summer. 4+ years later, she’s still going strong. Although Kris claims she hates having people watch her when she’s the last to finish a workout, she was absolutely amazed by the 50 or so people cheering her in from Murph this year, and grateful to the guys who ran in with her. ￼ Kris likes CrossFit workouts that have rowing, dead lifts, and back squats in them. I started at CFDR almost a year ago. I had recently ended a very toxic relationship that at one time I was fooled into thinking it would be my last relationship. I was lied to, cheated on and basically felt like I wasn’t good enough. I decided it was time for a change. My good friend Kellers (Kelli F) finally got me to step in to see what this whole “CrossFit cult” was about. My first day I could not do one pushup, and thought “wtf did I get myself into”. Overtime though I have grown into not only learning the weightlifting movements, pushups/strict pullups, and even have started working up to some of the more complex gymnastic exercises. I have even lost twenty five lbs. and have lowered my blood pressure from 130ish down to 110 over 73 on my last physical. Why come to CFDR? I’ll be dead honest: I’m an average guy that wants an over the top workout three to four days a week. Most days you’ll catch me at the 6 AM class, where you will find the infamous Coach Helen Taylor. Christin has been doing CrossFit at CFDR for over a year with her husband Michael. They are currently expecting their first child in May. Being pregnant didn’t stop her from doing her CrossFit workouts. You can find Christin putting in the work at the 9:00 a.m. class and getting her extra credit in on the weekends working on form and technique with her hubby Mike. She’s a perfect example of maintaining her fitness level while pregnant, all the while taking the necessary steps to keep both her and baby Kelty safe.

I started at CrossFit DownRiver in June of 2015 to improve my fitness level and gain confidence. I love that CrossFit offers a variety of exercises, adds social aspects to the workouts, and that fellow members (athletes) help motivate each other. Since joining I have lost 25 lbs of body weight, while increasing all baseline strength measurements! My short term goals are double- unders, strict pull-ups and to be able to bench press my body weight. My long terms goals are to snatch body weight, compete in RX competitions, and Isabel RX in under 3 minutes.

When I walked into CFDR in January of 2016, I wasn’t intimidated doing the CrossFit workouts, having done CrossFit for three years; the thought of doing them wasn’t frightening. What was, however, was getting settled into a new box, with new coaches, new people, a new set of eyes and a complete set of strangers. I wasn’t even sure I wanted to share my goals with Kirk because I was giving this box a trial run, kind of a workout interview! Here I am, one year later, (Kirk, you’re hired) in regular attendance and was able to achieve the goals I had set for myself last year. I knew when I began my 2016 goal of body transformation; I had to learn proper nutrition. Not just for fat loss/weight loss but how to properly fuel and nourish my body. CrossFit Downriver membership bonus is Coach Helen! Her passion for proper nutrition for all ages, all types of athletes and stages of transformation is astounding! I know I will not be the girl able to lift heavy weights, but I appreciate being pushed to challenge myself to do more than I could last month, 6 months ago and do it safely. I […]

Reflecting on her CrossFit career thus far, Becca gave us the following tid-bit on her adventures at CrossFit Downriver: Having been a member for just over a year now, I look back at some of the more entertaining bits and pieces and can only say that there was no better decision in the past 12 months than to have joined CFDR. From my first experience in walking through their doors and seeing Mary’s quads (and anyone who knew Mary and her amazing quads can understand how intimidating that would be to a newcomer), to my first post-onramp WOD – that being the “12 Days of Christmas” (I still shed sad, tiny tears over having survived that one), finally feeling that first little muscle finally pop up (though I still can’t seem to locate my six pack abs or amazing quads….baby steps, I suppose), and all the amazing friendships forged over the year, it has been a fun little rowdy ride. And while I still struggle daily with learning to fight back the urge to vomit when someone so much as whispers “It’s Deadlift Day!”, there are countless aspects of CrossFit I have learned to love (did someone say brutal chipper?!).
